Prepare for twitter to now invade the other 50% of the internet.
Our Assoc. Creative Director, Shay Mcgreal, gives his take on the announcement of twitters potential deal with google:
Internet powerhouses Twitter and Google have reportedly just signed a deal that could mean that live tweets will become part of our Google searches.
Twitter was involved in a similar deal back in 2009 with the second place search provider Bing, where tweets become part of search results, the cynic in me would say that maybe this was just Twitter testing the water for this weeks potentially game changing deal.
Twitter is already the most trafficked social website in the world, so I guess the only natural route is to expand into the way we
now get our news, people finding out about what’s happening in the world via social media isn’t a new thing, for most of us
its the only the way we get news, but this merger could really start to blur the lines.
That being said there will be the critics who parade around citing verses from ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ , to be fair I really
don’t think this is Twitter trying to manipulate us or the content we read, to be honest I think this is the next step .
Imagine a world where we get the important scoop not when the news van arrives but when ‘Joe blogs’ tweets about it
seconds after, us as people these days need our information fast, relevant and brief so what could be better than a tweet ?
I admit this is me getting a bit ahead of myself and for the early stages the integration will mostly be the musings of Steven Fry (not that this is bad) and which celeb Perez Hilton is calling out that day, but what i do think is that this is going to be a pivotal point in the evolution of information and the way we as a society receive it.
