Gaming in Marketing: yesyesBD create ‘careers advisor’ game for students.
In 2015, yesyesBD teamed up with Smashed Crab Studio, a game development company, to create an educational game that aims to help students determine the best suited academic paths for a career in the digital industry.
‘Ecliptic’ was designed based on retro, arcade games such as Metroid Prime and Mario, using pixel art and 8-bit graphics for the web platform and game. Like popular titles, Fallout, and Grand Theft Auto, this game allows the user to decide which path they take through the game based on their chosen problem solving method. Presented with a series of questions to determine their character, the player follows the story of their character, who is stranded on an unknown planet and is trying to find it’s way home.
Smashed Crab Studio, a creative software engineering & games development studio, based within Platform Studios, Hull, were able to help us create the game. Smashed Crab studio are the makers of games such as Rektangle and Flat Out, which are also available on the app store.
The game’s world-map follows the structures of the different career paths within the digital sector; Engineering, Creative, Marketing and Development. The levels of the game are focused on the different stages of each educational path and, similar to the real world of academia, the game play can change to reflect the different steps available within a path, meaning if the player takes a more academic path over a hands-on approach, such as apprenticeships, the challenges will become more puzzle/cognitive focused. These paths can change at any point and the direction of the game all depends on the user’s choices. The game works asking questions to determine the user’s personality and prefered method of problem solving, they are then posed questions and their response is used to generate an academic path based on their results.
yesyesBD have a keen interest in the games industry and its communications, previously, working closely with Platform Studios and working directly on the annual Platform Expos event in 2013, leading it to the most successful year since the events creation, we were thrilled to have another opportunity to work alongside the industry.
